I haven't been turning for long, and thus my attention to the availability of various timbers is limited. Is Mesquite common there in Texas? Do you cut your own? Does it grow in urban environments? How large does it get? I am curious because I am curious about all species that are not in Alaska. The side profile especially is fantastic.

Thanks Isaac. Mesquite is a fairly common wood in Texas and has availability further west and into Mexico. I have been fortunate to befriend a few folks who have Mesquite on their property and I have been able to occasionally make trips there with chain saw and trailer when a tree has fallen or is damaged. Most Mesquite in Texas is bush-like and does not form as a tree. It's the right environment (soil, water, etc.) that provides for tree development. It's a wonderful wood to work with.
