"Coquille"

Coming back from San Jose a few years ago we drove 101 up the Oregon coast. The southern coast area is home to lots of Myrtlewood and Big Leaf Maple and having just attended our first AAW symposium we were obliged to stop and check the offerings of the numerous wood purveyors along the way. I picked up this piece of maple burl and recently got around to turning it. It proved to a rather spectacular piece of timber and as is often the case there was a good sized spot of punky, hard to turn cleanly material. I soaked the whole thing in lacquer to help firm it up and it seems to have worked. I asked Karen about filling the voids and she said to just leave them. Proved to be a good decision. Final finish with wipe-on satin poly and buffed. 152mm x 190m (6" x 7-1/2")
Thank you for looking!!
