Yew Burl Round Bottom Box

Debuting another new wood here, this time it is European Yew (Taxus baccata). It is pretty easy to turn, but sharp tools and a light touch when sanding is a must. Know for being one of the hardest softwoods, along with being toxic and poisonous, it is a unique and hard to get wood, especially in burl form. Turned in my classic round bottom style, and finished with abrasive wax and melamine lacquer. Size is 1 1/2" tall x 3/4" diameter. I had this piece shipped from Germany as a large billet, and then cut up some box blanks to use. Overall a really interesting and beautifully colored wood!

I'd almost be tempted to call that a birdseye figure......but very nice no matter what you call it.

Nice turning as usual though......Gabriel! :)

Thanks Odie! I never thought about it that way. It does look like birdseye since the clusters are more separated.
