In the Shadow of the Giant

My submission for the upcoming POP exhibit Open/Closed. We'll see how it ends up being received by the jurors--I'm happy with the final piece though. It represents my love of nature, as well as the inspiration I find when walking around the woods (and the awe I feel when gazing upon a really large tree). The large tree functions as the lid to a box, as well as a spin top to add a bit more whimsy to the fantastical scene. 6" x 6" x 6".

There are many different turned components and species used: Honduran Mahogany, Gabon Ebony, Macassar Ebony, Claro Walnut burl, Bocote, Patagonia Rosewood, Pink Ivory, Black Walnut. I also included a turned Nutmeg sphere on the underside of the lid (large tree) as a surprise (as well as a representation of the inspiration that comes forth when in awe of nature). The Black Walnut base is carved/texture via rotary and woodburning tools, and colored with acrylic paints.
