Live Edge Forest Vase was made from Bradford Pear that was turned green and dried for a few months before carving. The design was inspired from a dense grove of trees that had lost their leaves in early winter. The piece is 7x9”, airbrushed dye and urethane topcoat.
This piece is absolutely beautiful and I am wowed by it. I have been turning for nearly 15 years and am asking, "how did you create that"? I understand the basics of carving a wood turned piece to create openings along the wall, etc., but your piece seems to have lots of additional layers of complexity/sophistication.

Scott, the pattern transfer was done by using a Cricut cutting machine (used by scrapbookers) to design the pattern from stock images. The patterns were cut out of paper in minutes and enlarged/skewed until the fit looked right. I then cut the final images on self-adhesive vinyl in different colors for each tree. The overlapping branches in different colors was used as a guide for carving the layers . Total cost for the vinyl and paper ($5.00) and time was a couple hours. The vinyl stayed on and carved around or just through when doing the levels.
