"Blue Spoonbill"

"Blue Spoonbill"

This "Blue Spoonbill", carved from cherry wood, is a haunting tribute to a species lost to extinction. Crafted with meticulous care, the piece was turned on a lathe, then carved, cut apart, re-assembled, textured, and wood burned to capture the delicate intricacies of the bird’s form. Mounted on a shallow pond, the reflective surface evokes its natural habitat, now just a memory. This work invites reflection on humanity’s impact on biodiversity and the fragile beauty of what we risk losing forever. Check out the splash area around the base of the bird.
