16” Maple bowl with tooled leather inlay. Similar to basket illusion as turning the bowl is the easy part.
Tell about the process with leather, has it been tanned, is that the term to use?
 
Charlie, yes, it is Vegetable tanned leather. If you want to tool leather, that’s what you want. I use 4oz which is about 1/4” thick for tooling. The process of tooling is a discipline within itself and one I am yet to become proficient. In short, cut your shape to be tooled. Wet it to the correct amount of moisture. Transfer your pattern to the leather. Cut pattern with swivel knife. Tool it using all those nice tools you bought. Seal it. Dye it. Finish of your choice. Nothing to it!
