Super nice Gabriel. I assume you use jam chucks to finish off the outside of each half?

Thank you Paul! I actually only use a jam chuck for the bottom. I fit the lid on the base and turn the top tenon off with it being assembled. That way I can get a nice profile before I hollow the bottom.

Another beauty Gabriel! In segmenting, it’s said we have zero/ little waste wood! I love how you show that even the smaller “chunks” of wood can be huge eye grabbers when done with your attention to detail!!

Yes Russ, this blank was about 1.75 inches square so I had to figure out the best shape for such a small box blank! The cylinder shaped boxes look better if they are larger in diameter, so a capsule shape was called for on this one!!

How is the thuja to work with, I think the finish looks different in comparison to your more recent work. It is softer, how does it work compared to other exotics? How did scraping, using skews, sg, sanding go?

Hi Issac,

It works a little differently because of how much oil is in the wood. This wood is very hard to sand, clogging up the sandpaper in almost an instant, you may also be noticing a difference because the finish I used was one coat of lacquer opposed to two or three that I now use on most of my boxes. As far as cutting goes, it is a very brittle wood, it is chippy and I can lose larger chunks if I am too aggressive. You are right it is softer then the rosewoods I have been recently working with, but it is still a very hard wood!
