Walnut Carved Damp

Walnut Carved Damp

Approx. 7.75x2.75. Turned green, hand carved while drying. First time using Osmo Gloss Polyx-oil. Interesting finish. I look forward to trying it more.
(I am recovering from a carving related repetitive strain shoulder injury. I haven't submitted in awhile and am way behind on my photography too!)
Awesome bowl Will. What did you use for the pattern or texture you made. I would love to try my first texture bowl since I have a ton of walnut to turn this winter.

I love the pattern you put on the outside

I set up some pencil guidelines running from rim to lip in a diagonal direction. Maybe about 3/4" apart to use as a rough guide to stay on track while I carve.
I then carve with a 10mm wide #8 Palm gouge from the rim down. I carved the outside before turning the inside. The piece was still on the chuck and I hold the chuck in a carvers vise. I had not turned green walnut before and found it turned, sanded and carved beautifully.

Very Nice Will, I find that the piece isn’t just about turning, it is about using all of your acquired craftsman skills to produce the desired artistic effect. That includes but is not limited to turning, carving, rotary tool work. Segmentation, pyrography, painting as well as other finishing techniques, all to produce beautiful pieces. Great Job!

Very nice, Will ... great textured look!
"(I am recovering from a carving related repetitive strain shoulder injury.)" Maybe it's time to get a reciprocating handpiece for a flex-shaft tool.

Thanks Brad! I love turning but I also am really attracted to working the wood with hand tools especially. It's nice and quiet and almost meditative.
Sadly I am finding it hard on my body as referenced by Tom above.

Thanks very much Tom. I am working on several ways to stay injury free in the future.

Yes, I’m feeling the advances of age as well. My hands and fingers curl up with cramps so tight at times, it is difficult to straighten them out. Shoulders going too. But, like you and so many others, it’s the love of my life. I’ll keep it up as long as I can. Happy turning!😎
