Red maple hollow form #2

5.5”h x 6”d; finished with shellac and buffed to a high gloss

Hard to go wrong with this tone and figure. The opposite side of this piece was very punky and required a lot of sanding sealer to stabilize. Started to worry I was chasing sunk cost, but stuck it out and am happy with the outcome. This is the largest vessel I’ve done with this high-gloss finishing technique and I learned a lot; have a few larger blanks queued up though 😉
tell us more about the finishing technique. Super!
I like to apply the shellac by hand while the piece is still on the lathe. To ensure even application, I apply each coat from the rim to the foot in one pass. I like the foot of most pieces to be much smaller than the diameter of the chuck, so when I reverse chuck to finish shaping the bottom, I turn the tenon down to about 3/4” so that I can grab it with pen jaws. That allows me room to apply the shellac all the way to the foot. I use a 1 lbs cut and apply with 100% cotton cloth with the lathe spinning at ~200 rpm. I’ll usually sand with 800 grit every three or four coats to smooth out any imperfections.
