False Wenge Calabash
Black Locust end grain calabash that I fumed with 10% ammonia for around 8 hours. Black Locust has a high tannin content, and as such responds well to ammonia fuming. It looks very similar to Wenge, but has a slight yellow cast. This is also a fairly small bowl at 2 5/8"h x 2 7/8"d. I made this as a giveaway for my club's monthly mystery box drawing.

Thank you Barry and Alan! Alan that is a nice article. It really is that easy. I do recommend fuming a scrap piece before your actual work, as there seems to be a lot of variation in time and depth of color change.

Thank you Gabriel and Russ!

Gabriel funny you mention Bocote. I almost bought a blank yesterday to turn some small bowls. Almost.

Russ, the color is wild. Pretty cool! I imagine this is what black locust would look like if you buried it in mud for a hundred years. I rubbed the surface down with a gray scotchbrite pad and then hand burnished-ish with a brown paper bag. Then finished with hemp oil. Easy peasy!
