I’m enjoying experimenting with this form after returning from my class with Trent Bosch at the John C. Campbell Folk School. The large walnut piece is 12” in diameter by 8” tall. It is finished with four coats of Waterlox. The smaller piece is 6” x 3 1/2”, finished with Doctor’s Woodshop Microcrystal Wax Bowl Finish. But that was a bit premature, as the piece was just turned from green wood this morning. I’ve got to give it some time to dry.

That's amazing that you turned the Beech bowl just this morning, and applied the finish today, as well!

Looks good to me, but what is your assessment about how it could have been different if the finish were applied later on?

thanks Odie! The piece still feels a bit damp to me, even though the walls are slightly under a 1/4” thick. I think I’d get better a sheen with the finish if I waited a bit. I’ll take it to the Beall buff in a week or so and see what I can do with it. The fact is though, it sanded down to 400 grit very nicely, and if I weren’t looking at it next to the walnut bowl, I’d probably be happy with it.

Nice balanced grain on both.
Trent is a great teacher and fun to be around.
I usually give HFs a couple days to dry before final sanding.
A soft finish look good on the beach.

Thank you Al! Absolutely agree about Trent. A great teacher and a lovely human being. I was in Fort Collins a couple of weeks ago, and he graciously showed me around his shop and manufacturing operation. Absolutely amazing all he has created and does.
