My next attempt at a thin wall staved vase. 8 staves, I used poplar for this one, wondering if it would be easier to turn thin. I would say no! The poplar had more of a tendency to tear out and is weaker. It was easier to sand out my mistakes though! The finish is about 6 coats of blue milk paint getting progressively darker in shade. This was sanded back to give the blotchy appearance. Top rim is black India ink pen. Finished with gloss lacquer. About 6.5" tall. All C&C welcome!

Blue Sky Steve! I love the flow of the rim, great job with that. The wall thickness is very impressive for sure. That’s a solid idea using black on the rim! Home run Steve!!

Nice elegant shape and use of colors. Poplar would be tough as you point out the nature of tears. You pulled this one off. Well done

Yeah, I think overall I prefer harder woods for these - harder to sand out mistakes but better finish from the tool.
