To me that is the definition of burl wood. Your design is the icing on the cake though!

Do you know if Amboyna (burl) is related to (or grows on) Padauk? Maybe I'm off-base ... memory isn't what it used to be.

You used a more rounded shoulder area than usual on this one, and with the fuller undercut, it really works well. Time to raise your prices, Odie--you've raised even your elevated game.

Tom: Yes, according to the information I read on the wood database, it is related to Padauk. I've turned pieces from African Padauk, and there is a difference there. This one is probably related to Burmese Padauk, since that species is native to the Thailand region.

Dean: Thanks for the inspirational message, Dean. I've already raised prices lately, because of the spike in the cost of wood and supplies recently. I really don't make much for the time and effort I invest in my woodturning. I'd guess I make around $5-$7/hr......even though I am one of the more expensive turners on Etsy already. Another thing I've noticed, is the downturn in our economy has influenced the volume of browsers that have visited my shop.....and, because of that.....my sales have tapered off recently, too. (Etsy provides information about the number of people who visit your shop.....and that number is way down from what it was a couple years ago.)

What to do??????

It very well could be a question of "To be, or not to be!"

Fantastic effort Odie!

Some quick reading says that the Etsy demographic is very young, the largest block is 18-35 year old. Those people typiclly don't have the disposable income to be able to afford what you should be getting for your work. My Mother in-law was very artistic and started doing art shows. She almost quit before somehow connecting with an agent that started getting her into high end, vendor by invitation only, shows. After that she not only got enough money to make it worth her time, but never brought anything home from a show. Maybe art shows aren't for you, but I think that in front of the right audience your prices go way up. And I think they should.
