Bill - The legs were roughed out using a rotary tool (wecheer 1/4hp flexshaft)with a 3/4" bull nose carbide burr and then finished with pattern maker rasps.
The celtic design was burned into the wood and then colored with opague art markers.
The pierceing was done with the rotary tool with a 1/32" carbide burr. This was the most tedious and time consuming part of the whole process.
Thanks Bam. I don't have any close-up photos. I've loaned the piece out for display for the month of August. That has already generated an offer to purchase it. If / when I get it back I'll take a close-up and post it.
I'm going to do a another piece along the same lines (hmmm.... does that make me a production turner?) and I'll post a close up of that one.
