2082 Fiddleback maple......or, is it?

Look closely....the 3D effect in this one is outstanding!

When I received this bowl block, I thought it was quilted maple, but have subsequently called it fiddleback.....which is also known as curly, tiger, and flame, depending on who is identifying it. Quilting and fiddleback are definitely two separate grain patterns, but this one has some qualities of each. The vertical striping looks fiddleback-ish, but the 3D effect is more reminiscent of quilting. 6 9/16" x 1 7/8" Small, but the figuring doesn't get any better than this!

So, who would like to positively identify it? -----odie-----
Odie, isn't this the same bowl you posted yesterday? ..... which seems to have disappeared from the gallery. I know I'm old, but I distinctly remember making a comment yesterday .....
I think! Did you delete it? I didn't know that was possible after the fact.

Hi Tom......yes, this is the same bowl. Due to a miscommunication with admin, yesterday's posting was deleted by accident. You are correct.....it's not possible for us to delete our own photos in the photo gallery, but it is possible through a request to admin. Wish I could have saved the great comments I had yesterday.....but, when they're gone, they're gone!

Quilted maple is a very distinctive pattern. Think of a patchwork quilt that looks like a bunch of little pillows that have been stitched together. The wood in your bowl has incredibly nice figure. I would call it fiddleback. In my mind, there is a subtle difference between fiddleback and tiger stripe. However, unless there is a compelling reason, I usually just call it figured and leave it at that.

For the past eight or nine years, my passion has been making coiled basket illusion pieces and for that, I want wood that is as plain as I can get. However, that is exactly the opposite of what everybody else wants. So, I sift through the bins at Rockler's and other places to find the pieces that nobody else wants. The problem with figured maple is that I get too much grain tear-out from the beading tool.

Yes, I have always wished that one image could be swapped for another, but that ability would also have the potential for misuse. Not even the admins have the ability to change one image for another.

....and, your basket illusions are outstanding, Bill. :)

With regard to the quote above, I find this especially true with quilted maple. As your tool cuts, it can abruptly switch to dead-on end grain at the worst angle possible, multiple times during a single revolution.
This can be overcome when all the components of the equation are working in your favor, but it's one of the most difficult maple grain patterns to do so successfully...
