I can’t believe it hasn’t cracked or broke yet. With the Center of the tree being the Center of the cup stem. For strength usually you see the pith off Center in a thin goblet. Nice piece though!
I’m going to say it is the mass of the piece of wood. The small thin goblet has had room to flex. Will it last through a winter and summer, possibly not. But you never know.
The walls of both the cup and the base must be uniformly thin so that they can warp/flex instead of cracking. The cup portion on this one is cut to between .03" to .04" from just under the bark edge down to about .5" diameter at the center where it blends into the stem. The base is also cut to a similar uniform thickness as you can see in the detail post. The pith on this one was almost dead center in the stem and there is a small crack on the stem that maybe a .005" feeler gauge would fit tight into.
The question if it will last through a seasonal change is that from previous experience I think it will.
