Cayley

A work inspired by the mathematical form know as Cayleys nodal cubic surface, described by the mathematician Arthur Caley. This is the 3D representation of the equation wxy+xyz+yzw+zwx=0. It was a form I couldn't resist.

The forms were entirely created on the lathe. The central tetrahedron wa turned as spherical box with a central spherical hollow to lighten the wood and make drying easier. The halves were joined with epoxy and the resultant sphere then on 4 axes to get to the final form. The cones were all straight forward to turn with walls about 1/16-3/32 inch to allow for piercing. The cones were joined to the tetrahedron with stainless steel screws and the heads hidden with thick epoxy.

I might have listened more in math class if they had this eye candy to teach with!! Nicely done!
