Out Of This World

African Blackwood one piece (no glue) Terror-Top with rose engine embellishments. It's a combination throw-top and yo-yo. Measures about 2.25" x 2.25". Photo enhancements made with the newly released Luminar 4 software suite.
Do you change the string to transition from throw to traditional? I would be afraid to damage it by throwing. Very nice work.

Hey Richard. To make an on-the-fly transition from yo-yo to throw-top, you have to use a style called "5a" or "freehand", where the end of the yo-yo's string is not attached to your finger. It does take a LOT of practice, so best to learn with a cheap plastic yo-yo. Here's a pretty good how-to video on the basic techniques:

Ed....did u yoyo in high school?

In the 50's and 60's, all the major US manufacturers had professional traveling yoyoist who would visit public schools throughout the country and give short demos during assembly. Pretty much everyone at that time was exposed to all the great things in life...yo-yoing, wood shop, metal shop, drive-in movies and big hair.

class of 68 here

Unreal Ed!!! Thanks for the link. Had no clue about 5A. Class of 77. The sixties arrived in Montana in the 70's.
