I got a log of cuban mahogany from a turner in Florida last year and wanted to do something special with it. I turned the rough shape 8 months ago and started carving it with rotary burrs. After 2 days of intensive carving, I developed pinched nerves in my neck and had to set the project aside for 4 months. After lots of doctor and physical therapy visits, I got back to work and recently finished the piece. It is finished with hand rubbed Minwax Antique Oil and carnauba wax. The bowl measures 8 1/4" high x 12" diameter. The 12 lobes/petals were laid out by eye and are not identical. I wanted the piece to look organic and handmade, rather than precision machined. This is the most intricate carved piece I have done.
