1600 Spalted Maple Burl

1600 Spalted Maple Burl

1600, Spalted Maple Burl, 9 1/2 x 1 9/16, 8.8oz. Took 10 months to stabilize after roughing. Initial MC was 34% very wet and freshly cut. Many voids and bark inclusions. Required sharp tools and good technique to avoid sanding, other than what was absolutely necessary.....very minimal. Excessive sanding would have destroyed the visual effect of the details and crispness of corners, edges around voids, bark inclusions, and intersecting planes allowed by (near) perfect geometric integrity. Sanded to 600 plus 0000 steel wool. Danish oil natural, Beall buffing method. -----odie-----
Odie, crisp edges on this bowl turned out very nice. Nice job.

-Karl

PS. Thanks for taking the time to share some pointers on keeping sharp edges and to describe your finish & finishing methods. Hopefully this encourages others to do the same.

@Karl Loeblein You bet, Karl.......

Note: photo was taken with natural light early in the morning, and sun hadn't fully risen yet. I did this experimentally to see how it would turn out. I feel the effect wasn't as good as when the sun is fully in the sky. It looks acceptable to me, but morning sunlight, however, remains my preference...... -----odie-----

Beautiful bowl Odie.....I really like the inclusions on this bowl. Well done indeed my friend.
