Hollow Form within a Form

Hollow Form within a Form

7”dia max x 16.5”h. The main body is turned from one piece of wood (Cuban Mahogany). Rings and grooves alternate along the vertical (spin) axis of the piece. The grooves are cut with a parting tool. The outer diameter of the rings define the outside form and the groove depth define the inside form. The Inside form is hollowed to lighten the piece a little. The base and top cap with finial were added last. They are dyed black w/Feibings leather dye and sprayed with Fixatif for protection. The entire piece is best viewed by changing ones eye level in relation to the piece. This piece was purchased by the Hawaii State Art Museum and become part of its Art in Public Places Collection.
I have come back three times to look at this. Both the positive form and the negative one are successful and they compliment each other. You should be proud of this one! Well done!

Wonderful! Jon, if you've played with different shapes for both and size/position for the interior part, would you do us a favor and post them?
