Engine Turned Ebony/African Black Wood

This was my third attempt at using one of the rose engine lathes of friends. They set me up with the blanks and helped me learn how to select and set up the rosettes, how to check for center, etc. Then they let me go.
I don't know what I'm going to use it in. Maybe a box lid or a center in a low profile ogee form boxelder bowl.
I'm going back down for another visit, hopefully on Thursday with a couple/few/BUNCH of boxes to see what I can come up with. I'm also bringing some discs made from various burl material, I'm interested to see what this kind of detail and nuance will look like on the busyness of burl.

I think that the Blackwood is great for showing off a highly detailed pattern like this. If the wood has a bold grain pattern then the fine details created with the rose engine would probably become overwhelmed.

Bill, I agree, up to a point.
What I have in mind is to spend a little time and material to see if I can get something interesting/usable. Just because it isn't normally done doesn't mean that it shouldn't be tried.
Before I use the burl I'm going to "stabilize" it and make sure that I'll be working with solid material. And the material I'm focusing on is not the boldest of coloration and/or burl.

very nice im currently building my own rose engine , and im getting very excited to start making patterns. i like the idea of putting the insert in the bottom of an ogee bowl

I have been using my rose engine to embellish small 3” boxes using hard maple, ash, and black walnut. Am fascinated by the infinite designs one can produce with the various rosettes.
Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

I've never used or even watched a rose engine in use so take my opinion with a grain of salt. But this pattern is really nice in my eye. Because you CAN add so much detail to a pattern, many do and it seems to make them too busy. But a more simple design like this is really nice.
