The end of "The Shanks."

I'm doing a hands on demonstration of thin walled pedestal box with finial at the Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center, February 8.
For the last week, I had been trying to make a finial for this nicely spalted sycamore crotch hollowform. I had "the shanks. I tried different woods, different tools, different techniques, I was breaking EVERYTHING!
Finally, yesterday, after taking a day off, I picked up this piece of curly ash and got an acceptable complete finial. I still haven't settled on my own finial design, so this is another variation
CA finish on the hollowform, Renaissance Wax only on the finial.
5 7'8 inches in diameter 9 1/8 inches high with finial.

The spalted sycamore hollowform is absolutely beautiful ... I really like the elegantly flowing form and and the great texture of the spalted sycamore.

The finial,doesn't seem to be a good match for the hollowform. If appears to be too tall and doesn't pick up the flow of the hollowform. It's a great finial so I would keep it for another project.

I do see what you're saying on the one hand, on the other...
The finial is 2/3 the height of the overall piece...
It is a little longer than the diameter of the hollow form, but I disagree on the flow. The only thing I might have done differently at the seem might have been matching beads, but the rim was already too thin to go back to, so I did this.

George, the spalted hollow form is a beauty, but just think/visualise what the finial would look like if it was black, say ebony or the such, to pick up on the black in the spalting in the hollow!

I started with a piece of violet rosewood, very dark. I wold have liked it I'm sure. I use DARK material for finials almost all of the time.
My wife had STRONGLY "suggested" that I go with a light color, holly maybe.
Maybe she jinxed my failures up to the point that I went with this..
All said and done, I like this and my friends were thrilled with it.

You know George, there are times when the "boss" of the house is right! Often, my "boss" says, "what the heck is that" and thus, it's back to the turning board! As long as friends and yourself like it, that's all that really matters! Often, "we" matters more than what "they" think and I still think that spalted hollow is a beauty!
