I bought this piece of lightly figured Big Leaf maple a few years ago and it had been setting on the wood rack wrapped in plastic since then. Rotten and punky from its confined state I considered sending it to the burn pile buy one cut led to another and so on.....
Having worked on calibrating my home made jig so it would provide pretty accurate cuts I opted to give this piece 15 faces hoping that they would be consistent and even- for the most part they are. The super soft wood presented challenges both with turning and the saw cuts. The top of the vessel which is end grain took a number of one cut and sharpen passes in order to eliminate the tear out.
The finial is a piece of Black Walnut that I intended to ebonize (make black with a chemical mix) but I liked the natural color so left it as is. The vessel is finished with 12 coats of polyurethane then sanded back to 600 grit and buffed, lots of luster without a lot of gloss.
It reminded me a bit of a parfait glass hence the name.
