1195 Cherry Burl

Finished 2/22/2017. This Cherry burl bowl, in block form was originally a very wet 32% MC. After roughing, it was anchorsealed, and took a total of 14 months to stabilize to EMC. The monthly weights were: 960, 935, 805, 735, 715, 705, 700, 705, 695, 690, 685, 680, 680, 675, 675. As you can see, the weights initially go down pretty fast, and gradually slow down until it reaches EMC. There is one month where the weight increased slightly, but continued to decrease after that. This is why you do the weights over months of observation, to assess the results. Block was initially 7x7x3 5/8, and final finished size is 6 5/8 x 3 1/4. Final weight is 265 grams, or 9.3 ounces. Sanded to 600, danish oil natural, beale 3-step buffed. Many bark inclusions and voids.
Nothing makes the shop smell better than working with cherry. Very nice work on a beautiful piece of timber.

Where do you get your burl woods?
And, I assume that the "EMC" refers Equalized Moisture Content, meaning that is as low a moisture content you are going to get in that environment?
Thanks.

Hi Tom......Yes, correct about EMC. When stabilized, the MC at my location may not be the same as what someone else gets at their location. It will be fairly close, tho.......
One of my favorite places to find burls is Cook woods.....but, like any rare materials, like Cherry burl, the supply is limited, so you have to be a "searcher", and purchase when you find them. There was a thread in the newbie forum that gave suggestions on where to find wood.
