Segmented Wood & Glass

Segmented Wood & Glass

A segmented platter challenge for our club. We purchased the segmented blank from one of our turner's, Jim Kramer. This was my entry. I turned the blank into an 11.25" x 1.75" platter and finished it with satin lacquer. I made the lid at a glass art store by cutting and combining colored glass, it was then fired in their kiln to create the domed lid. The finial was made from Zebra wood.

Ben, that's a pretty cool idea. So how do you get the glass to hold the arched shape? Is it placed on a mold and then slumps or do you work it in a soft state? Also, what is your mounting method for the finial?

Thanks,

Mark

Thanks Mark, The glass is fired in a kiln until the individual pieces melt together, then placed on an arched mold, it slumps to that shape as it heats up again. It is a two piece finial, the top that you see and a round piece of wood inside which is screwed up into the top piece. Ben

Thanks Ben!

Very nice. I just acquired a kiln a few months ago to experiment with combining turning with glass fusing.
