I'm curious, when your planning on making something like this, is there some sort of formula or equation you work to get the size to fit the 4,000 pieces, how did you plan this all so well?
 
I use a combination of a CAD program, segmented design software, and Excel to do my designing. In this particular piece, it was important to me to use exactly 4000 pieces because the number 4 was part of the theme.
 
Any idea on the actual hours spent working on this piece?

Quite simply amazing.
