Ebony Portals

Daniel, very unique piece. (Translate I like it.) I would be interested in knowing how recessed your "portals" are and how you did them.

Thanks. Each portal is 2X2 inches. They're backed with english walnut. I glued small black and white ebony squares on the walnut and turned them individually. Then turned the recesses all the way through the lead wood squares and made them fit the ebony buttons. Once they were all fit I glued and pressed them. Normally I'd mitre the individual portals but in this case I actually mitred my red heart staves, made the ebony dividers and glued the ring. It allowed me to keep the portals square and give a larger ring. The ring of portals is a little over an inch thick. The rest of the vessel is the thinnest I've gone in a turning. The walls are about an 1/8 of an inch thick. Nowhere do they exceed 1/4 inch except in the transition away from the feature ring.
