I find that ladies like them if they are done well. All surfaces need to be polished and finished nicely as women will touch them all over. They do seem to sell well. I do not recall where the wood came from as it was a gift.
I had the same trouble with this wood. I made a hollow globe ornament out of it and it is loaded with cracks. Even though it was fully waxed and quite old when I bought it, it was still wet inside.
It's a very pretty wood but not cooperative.
