Don I have been staring at this for about 5 min's trying to work out "How the hell" best I can do is shaped, split inside turned & rejoined & then carved away ???
A realy stunning piece both for the Art & the mystery 10 + 10

Wow. I've been out of town and didn't know this piece had made turning of the week. I am so honored. Thanks for your comments.

You got it right. I first turned the block into a "bagel." Then cut the bagel in half as you would to spread cream cheese, hollowed out each half, glued halves together and finished off outside. Then I used japanese saws, carving tools and Dremel bits to remove the last of the wood. Base was added next. Several coats of gesso and acrylic paint inside followed by tung oil varnish all over.
