box elder wood

That tiny little picture in the group gallery didn't do this piece justice.....almost didn't bother to click on it to see it closer.......this piece really is a very nice turning, and better as you look closer.....very nice job of it!

Thanks odie for the kind words :)

Thanks Gary! The base is made with Blackwood and the upper part is made with Box Elder wood. The base measures 3.5" high and the top is about 8" tall. Top diameter is 7".
The finishing on the base section was quite easy, just applied friction polish to it, but for the top part I had to come up with awkward finishing solution.
For the top section I have insect holes on the wood, so I could not easily apply the desired shine to it.
What I did was, take half a gallon of shellac and half a gallon of denatured alcohol, mix them up really well and dip the top part into the thinned-shellac solution and hang it down so that the excess shellac would drip off overnight.
Then I did some light sanding and I reapplied the same dipping finish to it one more time, turned out well.
After all that I assembled the base and the top part together.

I wish I had more of this box elder wood...this is the most beautiful red colour I've seen so far in the woods. And any new box elder I turned I never came across to this beauty. They all are one of a kind I guess :)

Cheers,
Jake
