Carved Tasmanian Blackwood

Amazingly difficult wood to carve but beautiful grain and colors. Moreover, amazingly difficult to photograph.
E, Who ever said that a turning had to be vertical. Everything works together. It looks like you carved or burred the interior and gold leafed. Can you elaborate. Stunning work.

This is a beautiful piece, e. I especially like the effect of the oval piercings along one edge of the opening, and the gold leaf, of course. Very very attractive.

Thank you all for your nice comments--very much appreciated.

The piece was turned and hollowed on the lathe with the vision of the form in my head, being careful to leave enough material for all the curves.

Perhaps this is the hardest part of using a lathe as a roughing tool for sculptural work--it's very easy to remove too much wood.

With the wood being so dark, it was the perfect application for gold leaf to capture the light on the inside. The walls were textured with a round burr and then lightly shellac-ed before applying oil-based gilding.

And I like to use many applications of a danish oil finish on this type of wood.
