13" walnut HF (17" with finial) copper leaf with chemical patina. Finial is ebony. Finish is semi-gloss lacquer. Finished just in time to take to my first club meeting tomorrow night.
I absolutely love this one. Where can I get information about creating these patinas on turned wood pieces? I've got all the chemicals, because I created copper bobeshes for some multi-centered candlesticks I turned some years ago. I assume the process is similar, but how do you keep the chemicals off the wood? Masking tape? Plastic?
Arthur, I got my info from David Mark's DVD. I got the DVD at
artchemicals. com (be warned, the dvd was not cheap, I had some sticker shock) It covers the gilding and patina process.
The Chemicals I used on the copper were Barium Sulfide and Sodium Sulfide.
If you have any questions, send me a PM and I will help you any way I can
There is a lot of information on the internet about patinas, but David Marks does some really great patina work, and has FAQ on his website. www.djmarks.com
Your piece is beautiful in both form and the massive use of the copper. Nice combination!
I took David's class at Marc Adams last year. We all ended up with amazing pieces. I also bought that kit with the DVD and patination chemicals too. Very cool stuff.
I'm sure you guys remember his piece on the back cover of our journal. He had it with him at our class.
Oh, and the chemicals did not bother the tape that we used to mask off the wood and other parts of the turning. It only reacts with the metal leaf.
