Hackberry Candle/Vase

Hackberry Candle/Vase

This is a Hackberry candle and vase. It was quite a challenge because of a lot of punky wood. Hollowing out both ends was a bit tricky too. There is only 1/4" of space between the top and bottom funnels. I could use some honest help on this one. I'm really not sure of the brown color on the vase. I tried blue, black and green and didn't like any of them. Any comments or new ideas on the brown would be appreciated. Being color blind can be tricky sometimes. The candle is glued in place and acts as a ballast when using the vase. The outside was dyed yellow. I put a fair amount of work into this and wouldn't like it to be just OK. Finished with tung oil and Beall buffed. Thanks for looking and all comments welcome, Don L.
From previous pieces of yours that I've seen, I can't imagine what makes me think I'm qualified to criticize any of your work. But everyone has an opinion. In the candle orientation I think it's a very nice piece. Nice wood, great shape, great finish. But I do not like the brownish/red color inside the vase. I would prefer a very dark brown, dark gray, black, or the original wood with the same finish you have on the outside.

Hi Chuck! Well, I can't go back to bare wood, although at this point, I'd like to. I tried black and didn't like it. The dark gray is something to think about though.
Thanks!
Don L.

Very Nice Don. Great shape & wood. I think that color would be OK in a lighter more transparent shade, but it doesn't take away from it being a very nice piece. Well done.

I like the candle orientation but don't care for the vase. Maybe it looks unstable, not sure. For color a darkening all around seems good but how to achieve it? I once had some pretty good luck using Formbys reconditioner.
