or communication boxes. The sphericals are boxes, as you can see on the second picture. The mind: If a couple or other two people has some difficult, secret or delicate words to say to the partner, he can use the boxes to write a message on a paper. He does the paper in his own box and put his box on the top. If his partner notes the partners box on the top he can have a look in it to read the message and to talk about. After it he puts the spherical on the old place. All ok.
Those boxes are amazing. Beautiful piece & thanks for explaining the tradition.
 
Very, Very nice. Wonderful colors and execution. I assume the wood(s) are Walnut; Ebony and some beautifully spalted Beech?
