Had the base crack apart while starting to part off. No catch, just pieces flying. 3 3/4" high.
You still have 4 hours. You can create a base from a separate piece of wood. The top sure looks nice.
 
Can't do anything tonight, but tomorrow I am going to try to extend the stem an inch and turn what was going to be waste into a new base. It will just make it a real bugger to part off. I think that there was a crack in the wood that let go, because I was turning on the waste at the bottom not near the base when it went, right into my Airshield.
 
Glad to hear you were wearing a faceshield. I also use an Airshield, or sometimes a faceshield. I'm always amazed to see demos where turners don't protect their faces.
