First real Hollow Form

First real Hollow Form

This is my first real hollow form (that lived). It's cedar and 6" tall X 4.25" wide. Finish is wipe on poly. A little texturing around the rim. I was thrilled to finally pull one of these off with a nice consistent 1/8" thickness. Please be very honest with any criticisms (I can take it)so I can go up from here. Thanks for looking and all comments welcome, Don L.
Hi Don........

Since you specifically asked for a critique, I have an opinion......and, it's worth exactly what you paid for it!!!!!

I like it when others venture critical comment on my bowls, too. This doesn't mean you have to agree with it, and although sometimes I do not agree with criticism I get.....there are times when I do, as well!

Your cedar hollow form is astounding, really! There is a lot of grain pattern in there that, to my way of thinking, conflicts with the very detailed top. You did just a superb job doing it, but there's a bit too much stuff going on there. I usually (not always!) reserve intricate detail work for wood that is more "plain" looking......and that piece of wood, is not!

You know the old saying: "less is more"!....and, it may not apply in all cases but, in your vessel's case, it might have been a little less busy looking up there.

No question about it, you are a superb craftsman, and the effort you spend on your work shows it! I know how it is.....sometimes we just get so involved in doing the details, that we end up not knowing where to stop......I'm sure guilty of that, old buddy! I need to learn this principle.....chisel it in stone.......darn, darn, darn if I can't get it through my thick skull sometimes!

I usually only critique when it's asked for, so it's all your fault! For the most part, the rule is.....If you can't say anything good......well, you know!
