Red Cedar Splendor
This is one of those pieces of wood that you bring back on your travels from overseas and sit on it until one day you have the courage or the inspiration to attack it
It had Western Australian Red cedar written on it ,maybe some of you Aussies can confirm this before I write on the bottom
A pleasure to turn and even better to carve although the dust is real bad . As everything turns red and I have a feeling I read somewhere this is one of the nasties
I made the mistake of sanding with oil to keep the dust down but when I first sprayed it found the slurry of read had etched its way into the end grain making it look dirty Had to take back to the lathe and re sand dry

The back ground was cut with a hot scalpel then with a small brush Indian ink used a first for me a slow process
Even though I had the area under the leaves smooth to 600 grit (hours of sanding ) when I first oiled the timber to bring out the richness the back ground and leaves were lost together so the highlight I think is an improvement (also I couldnt leave it round and brown could I
