Storm
First sorry about the photo ,this piece is hot off the press and I was so excited I could not wait to set up the photo both .So just hung a piece of paper on the wall ,Hence the wrinkles, at least its not blue .
200mm square 8 inches made from a piece of Burmese teak that I have been saving for a rainy day.
I built a landing platform for a 47 foot ketch and what do you know a piece was left over
As the vessel it came from has been sailing the blue for 5 or six years, I thought a nautical feel to the Mantaray would work.
The colouring was ideally a storm image I have in my head form a storm I was in off the cost of Norfolk Island were at 75 knots the wind meter blew off the top of the mast so with waves as high as the 69 foot mast the wind was gusting higher than that
I dont know if you have ever been in a full hard out storm at sea but it is just like a washing machine with waves coming and going in every direction.
I also wanted the wings to be quite pronounced as a sea bird in a storm digs in its wing tips to stabilize itself.
Alby is always saying how inspiration comes in many directions ,This was one of them
Hope you like it
