The cross section drawing in the photo shows why this piece was tricky to turn - aside from getting it down to 62 grams. the overhanging rim makes the inside return cuts in the bottom "corner" a disaster waiting to happen because there is almost no room for maneuvering and you can't see where you cutting so you have to rely on sound and feel.
Getting the grain of the lid to match up with the grain of the bowl was also fun. But having turned a dozen or more lidded boxes earlier, it was something I wanted for this piece.
While chucking and reverse chucking this piece - which I had to do quite often in order to tell if I'd reached the 62 grams weight requirement - I noted that beads provide some strength in critical areas - around the inside top rim and around the base. They also were my insurance policy for meeting the weight limitation since they could, if necessary, be easily, though carefully, removed.
The was an interesting project. The fact that the finished piece walks away - the cherry on top.
