Big Leaf Maple Emerging Bowls

Big Leaf Maple Emerging Bowls

A pair of emerging bowls produced from a Big Leaf Maple Burl. Both bowls measure 9"x9"x4.5". This piece started as a 9" cube, split in half, rejoined, and turned on 2 axes. Learned about this technique from Irwin Seidman. Very challenging and a true test of technique, equipment, and tooling. All turning done with the Ci1 Easy Rougher and Ci0 Easy Finisher carbide tools. Not a single catch... Whew! I used super strong double stick tape to keep the sections together as well as to hold them as a unit on the waste block. Lots of figure in these pieces including characteristic burl patterns, quilting, spalting, birdseye, insect trails, and natural edge with inclusions. Comments and critiques are always welcomed.

Very interesting work, Leo! Beautiful wood, great technique and a functional and fun piece to look at. Terrific job.

Thanks for the kind words, Greatly appreciated. This set has gone to the Louisiana Public Broadcasting Art & Travel Auction, as well as desk set and a peppermill. Hopefully the bidders will appreciate them. I'm experiencing separation anxiety.
