Big Black Cherry

Big Black Cherry

Made this from a large black cherry tree that blew down on my neighbors property last year. 33" tall. Largest thing I've done yet and won't do another this size unless I get a bigger lathe than my current Jet 1642. Pushed too many limits that I don't want to repeat but, wanted to see if I could. Polyurethane clear coat finish.
Stellar piece, Randy. I’m amazed that you turned something this big on your 1642. A testament to that lathe and your skills. Nice work!!

Thanks Michael. It was a challenge for sure. I was managing bedway real estate in small increments and with all the deep hollowing gear setup at the end it was close. Too close.

Thanks Darryn. I typically like to stand pieces up on my bench and step back to take a look a few times before I consider the curve and shape correct. Not an easy task with this one.

Thanks Richard. It's in our entry way now but hoping to get it on display to sell. I need a bigger lathe.

Thanks Nino. My main hollowing system for the bulk of the work is a Clark deep hollowing system with 1 1/4" dia shaft and cupped carbide cutters, tilted at 45 deg. For the initial opening and down to about 5" I use an articulated arm Simple Systems setup. Just easier to get the first part really clean and the opening size and thickness done with the smaller system before I mount up the big Clark bar. I also use the Clark steady rest.
