Barn Quilt Platter #3

Oak platter inlaid with textured epoxy clay
John is this similar to polymer clay and does it have to be baked? Beautiful and unique.

Lamar,

Epoxy clay is a two part putty that you mix together and let air dry. It cures at room temperature in 24 hrs and doesn't shrink. It adheres to wood well. I use Apoxie Sculpt from Aves Studio. It has a Play-doh consistency although a little stickier to work with

I tried polymer clay but the curing is problematic and can crack the wood. Also it didn't always adhere well.

The clay is inset into a carved groove, coated with a powder to enhance the look and then textured with a silicone texture pad while the clay is still soft. The texture pads are something jewelers who work with precious metal clay use.

@John Glessner Thanks John, I really like your pieces. I have done some work with mica colored powders with resin work. It works very well with your epoxy clay and I like the texture. It really adds to the oak wood platter. Well done.

Lamar,
Thanks for the kind words. As an FYI the powder I used in this is Alumidust from Alumilite. It is also a powder originally intended for resin as a filler. And since I also play around with casting resin, the Alumidust was already in the shop.

I got the idea of coating the clay with powder from polymer clay jewelers. So the first time I tried powder and epoxy clay it was sitting there and I said "mmmm...... lets try this and see what happens...".
