And Then We Were Three

This is representative of the birth of my first born son Elm. He turned 3 on Tuesday (May 28), and gosh it seems like he was simultaneously born yesterday and forever ago. Looking back, my wife and I had an idea of what it meant to be parents, but we didn't really know. We didn't know how much we would grow, bond with each other, even annoy each other, and love something in a very different way. We didn't really know how dramatic of a life change being a parent would be. Sassafras, Granadillo, Black Mesquite, and 9 Wenge pewa. 12.25"h x 4"d.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I went through a lot of different design options for this one. I wanted as masculine of a base as possible, and chose similar colored pewa to sort of blend into the Black Mesquite. One of those pieces that took almost as long to plan as it did to execute.

Love your "egg" pieces, Michael ... especially the multi-axis eggs on a pedestal. Is this a series? Hope so.

Thank you Tom! I enjoy turning these—a good sampling of different techniques. I am looking at this as a series. I’ve turned quite a few that just focus on the form, but this was the first where I tried to adopt a deeper meaning (edit: I guess this is the second--my Virginia piece was the first). I have some ideas where to take this that I’m excited about. Of course, I’ll have a bunch of interruptions in the mix (ex also working on a new “Shreddies” bowl now).
