Amphora I

Amphorae have been used for thousands of years to contain liquids like wine and olive oil. I made this segmented amphora from over 130 individual pieces of lyptus wood and then turned on a lathe. Because it has no base, I made a stand for it from Brazilian cherry. There is 22k gold leaf in the center of the base and the base is lined with green flocking where it contacts the amphora. Many amphorae have been found at the bottom of the sea in ancient ship wrecks - hence the base symbolizes emerging from the waves. It is 10" high with the base. The amphora itself is 8" high x 5" diameter. This is number one in my Amphora series.
