Is this an event where you can rematch the videos for two weeks if you can’t attend on those days?

Seems a little weird. Won’t give option to pay using PayPal. Just wants a credit card. I’m not giving any one my credit card number and a big syposium not using PayPal or other protected options.

I think your credit card offers more legally enforceable protections than paypal, for what that's worth. I don't think the federal rules have caught up with newer technologies yet, whereas credit card protections are baked into law.

Anyone know who is actually running this meeting? The website is pretty opaque about who or what "woodturners worldwide" is.

I've only just heard of the organization through our local club. Two of our club members are demonstrating. WW is a virtual club with a presence on facebook and Instagram. I don't know anything else about them.

I should also mention that there is another organization called Worldwide Woodturners (the words are revesed), which is run by Capt'n Eddie (Castellan), and which is a separate entity all together.

Giving my card to a website that only offers what looks like an amateur attempt to input a credit card number is a little concerning. And with no PayPal or anything. Makes me wonder about the security they have on there new website., and me giving the credit card and not knowing if there site has been hacked etc. Also it has taken me months to get a charge reversed on a credit card, and I once had a PayPal transaction for $750 us go sideways. Just send a picture of usps shipping info showing I had not received item and got money back immediately.

I got the facebook message but was put off by lack of information. I know some of the demonstrators are well known but I don't know anything about who is running it. I will steer clear this time. I first thout they were part of Cap't Edde but apparently not.

I signed up, will report back later! It’s got a nice group of demonstrators!

I wrote to the organizer expressing the concern about lack of information about who was organizing. He responded instantly and indicated he would add information to the web site. Seemed like a nice guy and quite legit.

I went ahead and registered. With a discount code I got it for $69. Sorry I can't share the code.

When the eMail invoice arrived I went ahead and downloaded the pictures and it turned out to be _four_ pages long! With one page containing only their logo.

All-in-all their eMail invoice looks like something an amateur back in the 90's created.
Also they provided an ICS file to place their event onto my calendar (Microsoft Outlook) that DID NOT work!

Only time will tell if they actually provide what they claim. So far I don't have much confidence.

Seems like a simple thing if people are wondering if it's legit to reach out to the demonstrators on social media to ask. I doubt they'd associate themselves with anything questionable.

You can use my code for $10 off registration. Code is Emiliano. I'll be a demonstrator. Over 500 people have signed up. Matthew Deighton is the organizer, very nice guy.

I met the organizer, Mathew, personally, I think it was at the Raleigh symposium. He reached out to me, I'm one of the "live" demos, mine won't be recorded, you snooze, you lose.

The schedule has not been finalized yet. You will receive an email with the schedule when it's available, soon. What is it that has given you the feeling of low confidence other than receiving an email with a big logo? There are some of the best woodturners involved in this, included me, I would like to know why so we can fix it. I can have Matt reach out to you if you feel it will help.

    A good line up
I saw @Emiliano Achaval do his calabash demo Saturday.
Great demo! I had to leave a tiny bit early he was just finish tuning the inside.
I enjoyed seeing the introduction which featured pre-contact calabash bowls and drone shots taken by his son.

It is a pretty impressive lineup of demonstrators. I saw Emiliano's Calabash demo last week ... I really appreciated the historical background he gave. I'm looking forward to the online symposium ... I signed up several weeks ago.

Hello! I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Matthew Deighton, I live in Pleasant Grove UT. I've been turning for 7 years, and have a career in promotion, events, and social media. I am also the person running the Woodturners Worldwide Symposium. I've always promoted other people, but I think I need to make my face more public.

I'd love to hear any of your ideas and feedback.

    • I checked with the platform I'm using and they don't have a paypal integration yet. But I can take paypal and give you a code to go sign up.
    • Great point on the confirmation email. I'll go beef it up
    • No schedule yet, but I'll get it sent out at least two weeks ahead of time. I'm building it out now, and it all depends on the lengths of the demonstrations. For example Cindy Drozda just decided on a two-hour demo.

I'd love to hear from you!

Glenn, yes. Most of the demonstrators have actually come back and agreed to have their videos up for an entire month after the event. Also, the videos are available immediately after their presentation. No waiting.

I'm sorry, I forgot you were going to be there! Kent has the recording available for club members if you want to watch the part you missed. I'm open to feedback, good or bad, it is one way of getting better at it. At Jamie Donaldson's suggestion, I hollowed it out a bit faster and saved at least 20 minutes of explaining how I do every step inside. I was able to do this with your club due to the number of advanced turners, they did not need to learn how to hollow it. I did explain how I do the transition area with a #5 Badger tool, and how I cut the bottom with a bottom bowl gouge.

    Matt,
I was wondering why you consolidated such a huge program into three days. Is it a woodturning symposium tradition? Why not longer? There is no convention center rent to pay. I understand that you can see replays up to a month, but I feel that I may miss a few extended programs or activities.

You make a great point. Between you and me, I'll be opening it up a few days early to allow everyone to register and look around. Vendors can interact at that time and we'll have some early demos for those that want. Still working out the details on it. I want this to grow, so we could absolutely make this a week long next year!
I've been thinking about how to fit in so many networking events. I think Wednesday would be perfect! I like where your head is at!

I think the problem some , including myself, have had is that there is no history . This large name comes out of nowhere and actually looks like it is from overseas. Hindsight is better than foresight but building rapport with the community ahead of time and get introductions from known turners does reduce the amount of "talk" that gets around. Also helpful would be if the website explained what the demos are and how it will be presented. Just food for thought @Emiliano Achaval for understanding we are most at the age we have become "doubting Thomas's" and you have to warm the waters before we will jump in.

You are right. That's why I think this event will grow every year. I got to see what the software looks like. Simple and efficient. You get to a "lobby" from there you choose where to go, who to see, and more. Almost like standing at a convention center trying to find the room where you need to go to see who you have chosen.
