what happened to the 8x8x8 entries

 Last year all AAW clubs were asked to make a club turning that would fit inside an 8x8x8 clear plastic cube. The cubes, with their contents, were to be mounted on some kind of traveling exhibition wall. At some point the individual entries were to be auctioned off - the unsold entries would be returned to the clubs.

I did hear that there were 120+ entries (not the possible 330) but have not heard anything further as to why the project changed scope (if it did), how much $$ were raised, etc......

Can anyone explain what happened?

Bernie,

To get an official explanation from the office in Saint Paul, I suggest that you directly contact the Executive Director, Cindy Bowden. Her email is cindy@woodturner.org.

Turning 25 - a Celebration

Hi Bernie-

Sounds like you are referring to "Turning 25 - a Celebration" which was indeed exhibited at the 2011 Symposium. The acrylic box display originally planned did not pan out (primarily for security reasons) but the works were displayed proudly in Ballroom A, along with the Professional Outreach Program's "Roots" exhibit and the David Ellsworth retrospective. "Turning 25" included work from 105 chapters in 40 different states with pieces by 211 artists. There isn't another venue for this show.

Like the annual AAW juried exhibitions, "Turning 25" was not designed as a fundraiser: these exhibitions are an opportunity for us to promote woodturning and the AAW, celebrate the work of our members and provide exposure for both new and established artists. Entry fees and commissions cover the costs of creating the exhibition, administration, space rental, insurance, shipping and handling, catalog production, etc.

"Turning 25" was very popular with both attendees and the members of the public who attended the Symposium. A PDF of the catalog will be posted on the woodturner.org website soon - I'll add the link here when it is up.

The theme for next year's AAW annual juried and invitational show is "A Walk in the Woods" - watch the AW journal for detailed information this fall.

Cheers,
Tib

There is also a hard copy of the catalog for sale ... if there are copies left? It's a great catalog, Tib!!

There will be a review of three three exhibits (displayed in the same room Turning 25, Roots, and Ellsworth). Look for the review in the October or December issue of the journal.
