Spindle gouge sharpening problem

When I sharpen my spindle gouge I get a concave edge on the wing. How do I get rid of and eliminate it in the future? I use the One Way jig and the Geiger Gouge Sharpening System.

Thanks in advance.

Keep the tool rolling on the wing.
With the jig the wheel contact point with the gouge edge must always be moving.

Two possible causes:
1. A common mistake is holding the wing straight against the wheel without rolling it.
this grinds a concave in the wing edge just the same a holding the point against the wheel grinds a dip in the nose.

2. With the spindle gouge you may not be sharpening to the top edge of the flute.
Which can also make a concave from stopping too soon repeatedly.

To get rid of dip in the edge-
sharpen the nose, sharpen the top edge of wing, don’t sharpen the dip.
Look at the results, continue the above step until the dip is hard to see
Then sharpen the whole edge.

When sharpening any area keep the tool rolling so the edge is in motion.

Hockenbery,
Thank you so much‼️ I think #1 was what I was doing. Went out the morning and resharpened using your suggestions and that did the trick. I’ve still got a lot to learn but this a step in the right direction.

Thanks again

I have a video up on platform sharpening, in part because I don't use the jigs. Main thing that causes that dip in the wing is spending too much time on that part of the gouge when you roll and swing it to the side. I am guessing that you are talking about a 'detail' type spindle gouge, so fairly shallow flute, and pretty much a section of a circle for flute shape rather than U, V, or parabolic flute shape. This is a far more common problem with the V flutes than with a U flute.... Try to keep roll and sweep rates the same through the motion. Every thing you do when sharpening is exactly what you do when turning....

Mike Waldt is pretty good. Plain and simple. Haven't had a chance to get a play date with him yet....
