For those of you who paint your work, if I want to try a little decorating on a plain vanilla box elder bowl, can I paint it with acrylic craft paint or milk paint directly on the wood, or do I need some sort of primer? (Not gonna try airbrushing--A) I'm not that coordinated and B) I've already got enough junk, er, I mean, essential tools). thanks for the help.

If you want a shiny paint finish like a car; primer, sand, primer, sand, top coat, sand, top coat, then a clear coat is optional.
If you want a rustic or chalk paint style; sand, paint. If you want to use true milk paint you should also add a low sheen clear over it. Some craft paints are sold as milk paint, but they are usually just flat sheen acrylic.

no primer needed - unless you want it to look like glass.
a few coats of Waterlox over paint makes it pop.

air brush paints can be put on with small brushes.
air brush Paints have more color choices than milk paints which are mostly pastels

both are fun to use and offer a lot of creative choices.

:cool:you do need an airbrush. Maybe 3.

I buy cheap nail polish at the dollar store when I want embellishment paints .. they work pretty well - this is a letter opener I used nail polish on the grooves.. then a finish coat of Deft spray lacquer over everything..

More than an airbrush, I need better eye-hand coordination. And better vision. And more patience. And...;)

The people at the place where I have my furniture sprayed told me that if I want to use paint for a finish, don't sand beyond 150. Paint is mostly pigment and not binders so you need a coarser surface for it to really stick. That might be why primers are used, but don't know...

Always do a test. Different paints go on differently. For a smoother glossy finish use a coat of sanding sealer first. An air brush really is not difficult to use especially for large.areas. water based acrylics are easy to use.
